How do I get a library card?

Free library cards are issued to applicants meeting the following criteria:

  • Persons (families) owning property and living within the district. Minors ages 5-13 must have parental or guardian signature to receive a library card.
  • Persons (families) renting property within the district.
  • Persons owning property within the library district, but living outside any public library service area. There is a limit of one card per family.
  • Click here to see our library district map

Non-residence library cards are issued to applicants meeting the following criteria:

  • If a person resides or moves out of the district into an unserved, untaxed area, a non-resident fee will be charged. Annual non-resident fee according to state formula is $155.00 per household. Click here for details

General Rules regarding library cards:

  • Library cards expire after 2 years and need to be renewed in person at the library with proof of current residence. There is a $2.00 replacement fee if a card is lost, stolen, or damaged. This fee is charged even if the lost card is expired.
  • All library cards from members of the Reaching Across Illinois Library System will be honored at the Cherry Valley Public Library District, just as our cards will be honored at other member libraries. Items checked out of the Cherry Valley Public Library may be returned to any RAILS member library and vice versa.
  • Materials may be returned in the bookdrop when the library is closed. For music CDs that are more fragile, please take a padded envelope from the CD counter and place the CD case into it before dropping it into the book drop.
  • The use of the library and its services may be denied for due cause, such as failure to return library materials or pay fines, destruction of library property, or objectionable conduct on library premises.
  • Patrons are responsible for library materials while they are in their care. Fines equaling the cost of damage will be charged to patrons who deface, destroy, or damage library material. The library realizes that normal wear and tear will occur. Patrons are responsible for checking the condition of materials before checking them out and alerting the library staff to defects or damage.
  • Patrons are responsible for all costs and fines associated with the use of their library card. All material checked out on a patron’s card is his/her responsibility, and in the case of a minor, the responsibility of the parent. There may be a $5.00 processing fee in addition to the cost of lost or damaged material.

How do I locate a particular book?

All of the information about the location of the library’s books is stored on computer. You can search directly from the “Search Our Catalog” box at the top right this screen, or click on the “Online Catalog” link at the top of the page.

The search box in the online catalog looks like the following, and is similar in format to the quick search on this page:

Keyword Search

You can choose what you want to search by the drop down box (where the arrow is pointing). Then type in what you are searching for in the outlined box. You can choose to search other libraries in our shared catalog by using the dropdown that says “Cherry Valley Library”.

Once you enter what you are searching for and click “Submit”, you will probably be shown a list of titles. We have a lot of things in different formats, so look for the format picture toward the right of the titles list. Once you have chosen the title and format that you want, you will see a screen similar to this:

Catalog Result

This shows that Jane Eyre (in book form) is located in the Adult Fiction section with the call number “F BRO” and both of our copies are on the shelf. If you need help finding a particular section of the library, please ask a staff person.

How can I renew my books online?

You can view everything that you have checked out and renew books through our online catalog. Use the “Your Library Account” link at the top right of the page to access this service. From the catalog itself, you can click “Login to My Account” at the upper left of any page.

The login screen looks like this:

Once you are logged in, you will come to a screen similar to the following:

How do I place a hold on a book?

If you are looking for a particular book but you find that all copies here at Cherry Valley are checked out, you can place a hold on the book and we will call you when it becomes available for you.

The following is an example:

Title Display

You can see that the status of all three of Cherry Valley’s copies of this book shows that they are not currently available. And, in fact, there are 95 holds on 29 copies (the arrow is pointing to this statement). This hold information reflects all of the copies from all nine libraries in our shared catalog. Be aware that Cherry Valley patrons will get priority on the items that Cherry Valley owns.

To request this book, you would click the green “Request It” button near the top of the screen. If you are not already logged in, you will be taken to the login screen:

Account Login Screen

Follow the instructions to enter your name, library barcode number and PIN (to create a PIN, simply enter what you would like it to be) and then click “Submit”. First time users will then be prompted to confirm their PIN by re-entering it.

You will then come to a screen similar to this:

Hold Pickup Location

The first drop down specifies where you would like to pick up the item. You can choose a different library in our system if that is more convenient for you. You do not need to specify a “Cancel” date unless you don’t want to wait past a certain date. And be sure to click the “Submit” button! You will receive an automated phone call or email when your item is available for pickup.
