Important Information for Airline Passengers

REAL ID and Air Travel

Do you frequently fly within the U.S.? Do you have a domestic flight planned shortly after the first of the year? If so, you need to be informed. As of this writing, Illinois driver’s licenses are still not in compliance with the Department of Homeland Security’s REAL ID Act and the state’s application for an additional extension to comply is currently pending. This means that starting January 22, 2018, domestic air travelers with Illinois driver’s licenses may be required to provide alternate acceptable identification which includes a passport or passport card. If travelers cannot provide acceptable forms of identification, they may not be permitted through the security checkpoint. (Check www.dhs.gov/real-id for updates on Illinois’ compliance as well as other states.)

The Cherry Valley Public Library is an official passport application acceptance agency.  If you would like to be on the safe side of this issue and obtain a U.S. passport, call the library at 815-332-5161 and make an appointment to apply. Keep in mind that the current average processing time until you get your new passport is approximately six weeks.
