Kanopy for On-Demand Streaming

Kanopy LogoThe popular on-demand film streaming service Kanopy is now available for free from the Cherry Valley Public Library District. Library card holders can access Kanopy and sign up to start streaming films on instantly by visiting https://cherryvalleylib.kanopy.com/. Films can be streamed from any computer, television, mobile device or platform by downloading the Kanopy app for iOS, Android, AppleTV, Chromecast or Roku.

Offering what the New York Times calls “a garden of cinematic delights,” Kanopy showcases more than 30,000 of the world’s best films, including award-winning documentaries, rare and hard-to-find titles, film festival favorites, indie and classic films, and world cinema with collections from Kino Lorber, Music Box Films, Samuel Goldwyn, The Orchard, The Great Courses, PBS and thousands of independent filmmakers.

With the motto of “thoughtful entertainment,” Kanopy provides Cherry Valley library patrons with access to films of unique social and cultural value; films that are often difficult or impossible to access elsewhere, and programming that features diversity, with a wide array of foreign language films and films on race, and current affairs.

Getting Started with Kanopy
1. Go to https://cherryvalleylib.kanopy.com/ and enter your library card number and PIN.
2. Create an account by entering your first and last name, an email address, and a password and then click on the orange Sign up button. You choose the password for your account. This password is not the same as your library card password. You will login with your email address and password every time you access Kanopy.
3. Go to your email account to verify your email address.
4. Start watching videos!

Frequently Asked Questions
1. How many titles can I watch?
You can watch a maximum of 10 videos per month. You will receive 10 play credits every month. Once you press play on a video, you will automatically use one (1) play credit.
Once you press play on a video, you will have 3 days to view it as many times as you like without using another play credit. If you would like to watch the same video after the 3 days have passed, you will use up another play credit.

2. When will my play credits reset?
Play credits reset on the 1st of the month.  Once you have used your 10 credits, you will not be able to play any films until the new month starts when you will be given a fresh quota of 10 play credits again.

3. How can I keep track of my videos?
You can track your viewing activity by visiting My Dashboard > Recently Viewed. The Recently Viewed page will list every video you have ever watched, even after the 3-day period has ended. If a video is still within the 3-day viewing period, the list will include the amount of time left on that viewing period.

4. Can I create my own video lists?
You can save titles to watch at a later date by clicking on +My List. You can access the +MyList option by either hovering over the title, or clicking on the title, either way will work. Titles are then added to your Watchlist. You can see your saved titles by clicking on your username at the top of the page. You can also create and share playlists of videos using the playlists feature.

5. What devices can you use to watch videos?
You can watch videos on a computer or mobile device using a web browser.

You will need an internet connection to watch videos on Kanopy. Films cannot be downloaded to a computer or device; they only stream through the internet.

6. Can you stream to your television?
Kanopy is compatible with the streaming services, Roku. Other alternatives to stream to your television include:
• Apple TV
• Chromecast using an Android/Google device
• Connecting your computer to your television via HDMI

7. Can visually or hearing impaired users access the films?
Yes, Kanopy’s website and video player are both fully compatible with all screen readers on desktop browsers, as well as with iOS and Android devices. In addition, all films have closed captions, subtitles and transcripts that are fully ADA compliant.

8. Are there videos for kids?

9. Does Kanopy offer parental controls?
You can set up Parental Controls to make sure your kids are viewing age-appropriate content on Kanopy. With Parental Controls enabled, you will need to enter your PIN when exiting Kanopy Kids in order to watch content outside of the kid’s collection.
